LinkedIn’s nifty new feature — Career Advice
Recently, I was dabbling with LinkedIn’s features when I came across this new spot on my profile’s “Your Dashboard” called “Career Advice Hub”. I decided to explore it out of curiosity. From an outside perspective, it seemed like a mentor matching feature.
It has a super intuitive page where you can set your preferences based on the two simple W’s, ‘who?’(who you would like to get advice from) and ‘what?’(what you would like to get advice on). It took me about five minutes to set my preferences to get this feature activated.
At first, I was a little skeptical about how this feature would help me with my career growth. It did not take a long time for this feature to match me with leaders and experienced people in the industry based on my preferences. Within the first week of activating this feature, I got notified - “You have new recommendations on Career Advice”. I decided to reach out to a couple of my matches and they were quick enough to respond to my queries.
What’s great about this?
The matches had no inhibitions talking to me and were open to sharing their contact information. During my interaction, they gave me ideas and guidance to achieve my goals with respect to exploring new domains in the industry. One of my matches even introduced me to his LinkedIn connections which helped me broaden my network and interact with people who share the same interest in my field.
I think the biggest value proposition of this feature is that it sets the expectations clearly even before the interaction with the matches happen. A potential mentor is matched only if he/she expresses an interest in communicating with you. This increases the chances of a successful two way communication between the mentor and mentee.
From my personal experience, this is a useful tool and a very exciting feature which deserves attention if you are looking for some real career advice.
